Ismail: Farming Against the Odds with Tuli Strength

In the rugged mountains of KwaZulu-Natal, Ismail turns challenges into opportunities. With Tuli cattle by his side, his vision for success continues to grow stronger.

Meet Ismail Ameen, a passionate farmer from Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. He runs his commercial farm with determination and a clear vision of success despite many challenges.

Recognised by the Tuli Growth Initiative, Ismail was given Tuli cattle—a hardy breed known for thriving in diverse environments. His farm, situated in the Drakensberg valley, is no easy terrain; yet, the Tuli cattle adapt well, climbing and grazing with ease. To manage them, Ismail even keeps horses to help fetch his cattle in the steep mountains.

Alongside Tuli, he also farms with other cattle breeds, showing his willingness to explore and innovate. Like many farmers, Ismail faces challenges such as jackals and bush pigs preying on his herd. Still, he remains resilient, introducing solutions like electric fencing to protect his cattle.

Ismail’s journey is one of passion, resilience, and innovation — a true reflection of the spirit of emerging farmers.
